We are proud for having been honored with the task of organizing this traditional Congress, particularly on this Tenth Edition, that will mark the evolution of 20 years of permanent labor by researchers from every corner of the world, who have built rather than a subject for study, a life devoted to revalue this segment of the American history. It relates, undoubtedly, to a past that can be considered an example for many, since they understand that there existed a group of people who wanted to build a better world within a completely unfavorable context.
We are also greatly pleased with this opportunity to act as a link between the Jesuit-Guarani culture and the teachings with which the Jesuit Fathers, through their Ratio Studiorum, built their missionary and educational experience.
These seminars have had a long history since they were first organized within the national symposia held in Brazil from 1971 through 1991. They were born as a complement of those symposia, always with the clear purpose of encouraging scientific research. The first seminar was held in Resistencia (Chaco, Argentina) in 1982, organized by Dr. Ernesto J. A. Maeder, the then Director of the Geohistorical Research Institute of the CONICET. Since then, eight symposia have been held in Posadas, Argentina, in 1984; in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in 1986; in Asunción, Paraguay, in 1990; in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1994; in Marechal Rondón, Brazil, in 1996; in Resistencia, Argentina, in 1998; in Encarnación, Paraguay, in 2000; and in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 2002.
On our part, the International Congress organized to celebrate the 400th Anniversary of the arrival of the Jesuits to Cordoba, held in 1999, aimed at calling upon the researchers of various parts of the world and gathering them precisely in this emblematic site of the Society of Jesus in the capital city of Cordoba, was a unique challenge in which the acknowledgement of the work of the Society of Jesus prevailed. That work which spread over one and a half centuries was crowned in the year 2000 with the inclusion of Cordoba’s Jesuit architectural heritage in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
Cordoba, the old seat of the Jesuit Province of Paraguay, witness of the educational and missionary activities of this large area, will be therefore, in the Spring of 2004, the site for the gathering, exhibition, discussion and debate of the work of many experts, researchers, professors and students who work on and study the history and culture which developed in a far corner of the world, and which originated a very special understanding among men.
The guidelines for this Congress shall be the educational and missionary work which the Society of Jesus projected like two parallel and well organized action tracks, thus creating a solid experience which later would allow them to implant the ideas of the Christian and Western culture in this part of the world.
And finally, we wish to emphasize how honored we feel to prepare and then to host this gathering of the scientific community and every person interested in this subject, and how pleased we are to share and also to pay back the immense gratefulness we owe to our peers and to those who have been our teachers..
